Promising Practices for Children with Autism for Ages 0-6, 6-12, 12-18 (18 Hours)

You will get an overview of current research on autism and evidence-based, effective Best Practices for teaching young children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). You will learn about an Activity-base Intervention model that capitalizes on daily routines to incorporate effective teaching strategies. Research on the best programs shows common elements including a strong individualized curriculum to address the deficits in children with ASD, involving and teaching families and team members
You and your team will be guided to do the following for your child
- Develop a profile of your child, including learning style, communication and sensory
- Identify and plan a team of support people
- Plan individualized curriculum and set priority goals
- Arrange the environment for better learning
- Choose age appropriate skills to teach, break them down into teachable steps, make decisions about the most efficient prompts to use and how to fade them
- Promote predictability and routine, yet ensure your child is equipped to handle change and be flexible
- Understand the communicative message of behaviours and identify potential positive behaviour support strategies based on functional behaviour assessment
- Initiate peer mediated learning and playgroups,

- Plan for transition to school
