electronic devices and that can be implemented in school settings. Such
strategies include scripted routines, gesture dictionaries, schedule

3C. The Participation Model: A Process for Designing
Augmentative Communication Interventions
This one-day
workshop provides a theoretical and practical model that can be used
within a school district to design and monitor communication interventions
for student with severe disabilities. The model includes assessment
of communication and participation needs, opportunity barriers, and
access barriers. It provides a way for resource teams to build communication
interventions to meet student needs both currently and in the future.
Discussion of systemic constraints and issues related to the provision
of communication services is also included. The process is illustrated
with a longitudinal case example of a child with multiple disabilities.
Target
