This one-day
workshop provides an overview of the characteristics of autism and other
pervasive developmental disorders, with emphasis on the unique learning
styles and environmental needs of these individuals. The relationship
between the challenging behaviours of persons with autism and their
communication deficits is described in detail. Information about basic
support and learning strategies that can be used effectively with children
with autism is also included, along with a discussion of the challenges
faced by parents and other family members.

Disorders
This one-day
workshop provides an overview of the characteristics of autism and other
pervasive developmental disorders, with an emphasis on communication.
Basic assessment and intervention issues related to communication and
strategies for approaching them are also discussed. The workshop also
includes a discussion of the types and functions of echolalia (repetitive
speech) and strategies for encouraging generative language development.

6C. Augmentative
Communication for Children with Autism/Pervasive Developmental Disorders
This one-day
workshop emphasizes issues and approaches to providing augmentative
communication supports to children with autism whose speech is inadequate
to meet their ongoing daily communication needs. The workshop first
discusses augmentative communication for children who need to develop
non-formalized communication such as gestures and body language. It
then includes information about children who require formalized communication
using symbols such as manual signs, photographs, or line drawings. The
use of communication technology to support these learners is also discussed.
