2. Challenging Behaviour

2A. Basic Principles of Behaviour

This one-day workshop is designed for individuals with little or no prior experience supporting individuals with moderate-severe disabilities who experience challenging behaviour. Emphasis is on providing a firm foundation related to the dynamics of behaviour, including the influence of setting events, antecedents, and consequences. Participants will be provided with explanations and examples of positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, punishment (two types), generalization, and other basic behavioural principles. Exercises to teach participants how to diagram the behavioural dynamics of the individuals they support will be incorporated throughout.

Target Audience: Parents/guardians, family, friends and neighbours of persons with mental handicaps; social workers, residential, community, and vocational supports, child care supports, supervisory and training personnel

2B. Introduction to Communication Approaches to Challenging Behaviour

This one-day workshop is designed for individuals with basic knowledge of the content described in Workshop 2A. The goal of the workshop is to provide those responsible for intervention planning and implementation with an overview of communication solutions to challenging behaviour. A rationale for viewing challenging behaviour from a communication perspective will be introduced. The emphasis of the workshop will be on introducing participants to a variety of activity and ecological interventions as well as interventions to teach alternative communication behaviours.

2C. Communication Approaches to Challenging Behaviour: Assessment and Intervention

This two-day workshop is designed for individuals with basic knowledge of the content described in Workshop 2A. It is meant to be an alternative to Workshop 2B that provides more extensive emphasis on techniques for behavioural assessment. These include analog assessment, setting event checklists, the Motivation Assessment Scale, and scatter plots. As with Workshop 2B, examples of ecological interventions as well as those that teach alternative communication behaviours will be provided. Strategies for behaviours related to stress, anxiety, and frustration will also be included.

2D. Introduction to a Positive, Non-Aversive Approach to Behavioural Support

This one-day course is designed to provide a historical overview of traditional and current approaches to behavioural support. The traditional behavioural/medical approach is compared and contrasted with positive, non-aversive approaches. Ethical, legal, and administrative reasons for using a positive, non-aversive approach are presented. Outcome measures that can be used to evaluate the effectiveness of behaviour support are discussed in detail. The basic components of a positive, non-aversive approach are described, along with example of interventions related to these components.
