5A. Introduction to Autism and Pervasive Developmental Disorders

This one-day workshop provides an overview of the characteristics of autism and other pervasive developmental disorders, with emphasis on the unique learning styles and environmental needs of these individuals. The relationship between the challenging behaviours of persons with autism and their communication deficits is described in detail. Information about basic support and learning strategies that can be used effectively with individuals with autism is also included, along with a discussion of the challenges faced by parents and other family members.

Target Audience: Parents/guardians, family, friends and neighbours of persons with mental handicaps; social workers, residential, community, and vocational supports, child care supports, supervisory and training personnel
